MarketplaceHome Staging Nz "Are sabbatical" will be the downfall of New Zealand rugby? At this point, Dan Carter is the only player in New Zealand have been granted a sabbatical, "but with other players such as Luke McAlister and Carl Hayman possibly eyeing a return to New Zealand (in the case reported some media are true) are not these players actually had a sabbatical "too?? There is nothing to stop players going overseas, then return, but it seems to be something wrong with players turning their backs on New Zealand to try something different just decided that this is not for them and go home ... potentially slotted straight back in a Super 14 team and perhaps the AB. What is the point in the development of young players, just to have the old back and perhaps take their place. All this will do is encourage the players more and more young people going abroad, either because they are disillusioned with rugby in New Zealand or they think they can go abroad and return when they want it and slot right back in. It's a tough question, because in the end we want the best players playing in New Zealand and could mean that players will agree to return again in the AB, but I worry that it will be for the development of young players and what message it sends. I do not know what the solution, but I am not a good feeling about this ...... This is one of the penalties we pay for being in professional rugby. Thus, these men earn their living. What is the difference between Ernest Rutherford moved to Canada and the United Kingdom to carry out their profession in physics and Luke McAllister moving to England to play rugby? Or Leon MacDonald play in Japan? Just because McAllister eyeing a return does not mean that he makes the All Blacks. It must still prove its worth and try to make the side. It could prove to be a mistake. He could get hurt, do not be in shape this year and not have chosen for the World Cup. Who knows. Someone else can also come and get picked before him. Anyway it depends in 2011 that will, not now. I agree that the Dan Carter "sabbatical" will not happen again. I have a problem with players leaving for non-SANZAR teams, then return to World Cup year. It's having your cake and eat it IMO IMO which means that Luke McAlistair is not eligible for the ABS. On the other hand, I am ready to accept a player from a Super 14 team, including SA and Australia should be regarded as playing for a team of New Zealand and is therefore eligible for the AB. That is about the only compromise that I think should be taken to the admissibility AB. The main difference is that Carter remains under contract with the NZRFU in that it has a place waiting for him in the Crusaders returning. These other guys are not so if they return to New Zealand, then they take the risk of S14 will not want. Unlikely, but ... Posted on September 4, 2010.
