2. financial advisor approach (preferably independent) and how much you can borrow.
3. register with local estate agents
4. houses for
5. put in the tender / negotiate / agree on the selling price.
6. mortgage company statement, which in turn instruct a surveyor.
7. obtain counsel who will start research, etc.
8. Sign up to lawyers and agree the date of completion.
9. move.

Make it simple, but which is most of it. But after June 2007, unless the change of government again, there will be a Home Information Pack on each home prepared by the seller.
This will contain all the information attorneys and thus reduce the time needed to purchase a property.

Find a job. Mortgages are based on a multiplier of income. to buy something that is in disrepair that you can afford to make room. You make a lot of money if you're right. London is not necessarily the best place to start, but will offer the best rewards.
