Anselm Catherine "Kate" Gleason (November 25, 1865 - January 9, 1933) was an American engineer and businesswoman known both to be a revolutionary in the male-dominated field of engineering and for his philanthropy.
Youth and Gleason Works
Catherine Gleason Anselm was born the first of four children of William and Ellen McDermott Gleason of Rochester, NY, IGR of Ireland. His father owned a machine tool company, later called Gleason Works, which later became (and remains) one of the largest makers of machine tools, gear cutters in the world. When she was 11, his brother Tom died of typhoid fever, resulting in difficulties in the company of his father because Tom had been an important ally. At age 12, she began working for her father to fill the void left by the death of Tom. In 1884 she became the first woman to be admitted to study engineering at Cornell University in Ithaca, NY, although she could not complete his studies at Cornell because of his presence necessary in the plant. She continued her studies on his return to Rochester Institute of Mechanics, later renamed Rochester Institute of Technology. She has participated actively as treasurer, and Gleason Works vendor. In 1893, she toured in Europe to expand the activities of the company, one the first time an American manufacturer has attempted to globalize their operations. Today, international sales account for nearly 3 quarters of the company's business.
Fred H. Kate Gleason Colvin describes in his memoirs as "a kind of Madame Curie machine tools [Kate spent his youth learning his father's business from the ground, both in stores and on the ground, so that when it branched for itself in 1895 as a sales machine gear cutting of her father, she knew as much as any man in the company. "
Ellen Gleason was a friend of his fellow Rochesterian Susan B. Anthony, and Kate Gleason Anthony later cited as a source of advice. Gleason has undertaken many efforts to support Women's Suffrage after the death of Anthony.
Life after leaving the factory Gleason
Due to conflicts with his family left Gleason Works in 1913 and found work in the Ingle Machine Company. In 1914, she was the first woman elected to full membership in the American Society of Mechanical Engineers and the company represented at the World Conference of electricity in Germany. In 1918 she was named president of First National Bank of East Rochester, while the former President has been enlisted in the First World War, she used this position to continue its humanitarian efforts in Rochester, starting eight businesses, including a construction company that built houses for the middle class. Later, she left Rochester for business opportunities in South Carolina and California, eventually putting in France, where she assisted in the recovery of a city after the First World War
Personal life
Gleason viewed marriage as an obstacle to his professional life, and she never married nor had children.
Death and legacy
She died January 9, 1933 pneumonia and is buried at Riverside Cemetery in Rochester. It left many of its 1.4 million dollars in real estate agencies in the Rochester area, including libraries, parks, and the Rochester Institute of Technology. The Kate Gleason College of Engineering at RIT is the appointed hour.
