National Redesign InstituteTranslation and drafting of MSDS chemicals under REACH and GHS PLC

msds-reach.jpg With less than four months left until the first deadline (December 1, 2010) for the registration of chemicals under REACH Europe (Registration, Evaluation and Authorisation of Chemicals) legislation, manufacturers and importers are under increasing pressure to comply with new requirements for data sheets preparation.

The new regulation for the SDS format applies to chemicals and chemicals that must be shipped to the European Union and / or offered for direct sale on the market.

Fact Sheets are reviewed during import and chemicals manufacturers and importers with SDS does not comply with the latest regulatory requirements will not be allowed to distribute or sell their products on the EU market.

One of the main differences between sheets previously used label sheets and safety data in force under REACH is the requirement of an SDS (including exposure scenario) should be submitted in an official language of the State Member (s) on the market which the substance or preparation is placed (unless the Member State (s) otherwise).

The amendment to the EU legislation mentioned above will require that companies operating in the professional use of the chemical industry suppliers of translation.

A translation company should familiarize themselves with the new REACH Regulation, Annex II (which provides a guide to preparing MSDSs) and translate all SDS and MSDS requirements under this.

Since SDS need to be written in the official language (s) of the country where they are designed to respect the laws of the jurisdiction of the Member State in which they must be used, the direct translation of documents is rarely sufficient.
Rather than translating the SDS or MSDS directly from the source to the target language, a translation company can take the existing document and author a new series of data sheets in the language (s) required to comply with local regulations.
To make the task of creating data sheets , a translation service company must have a home pool of translators with senior titles in chemistry and industrial hygiene.
In addition, translators must be experts in technical translations and familiar with local regulations and industry-specific national legislation.

The exact location and correct translation of the MSDS safety sheets or ensure that all official translations, as published in the Official Journal of the EU are used (ie obligatory section titles, classification appropriate, hazard statements, risk and caution, according to exposure scenarios, risk management measures, toxicological and ecological information, etc..) Furthermore, the SDS will be precisely located for national occupational exposure limits, the hazard classifications and other regional requirements.

The format and content of the sheet of original data often need to be changed. A translation company should have the necessary resources to support different formats, conversions and SDS produce PDF for easy distribution by e-mail and Internet.

ECHA (European Chemicals Agency) amended the requirements f.
