U Haul Trailer Hire

We are moving from southern Maryland to Tacoma, Washington. My wife and our daughter two months is already there, and our two year old son will be driving there in mid-spring. I try to see if it would be best to hire a moving company, or rent a U-Haul trailer. We're on a pretty tight budget of about $ 3,000, the cost is a concern, and I get a headache every time I have tried to include the cost of fuel, hotels, food, etc. Can anyone help me with a little experience?
